Virtua Tennis 3 (Xbox 360) $5.99 Virtua Tennis 3 isn't just tennis, but multi-tennis, with 12 mini-games for you to hone your skills, have fun or exert your Federer-like dominance over the competition. These involve things like knocking down ninepins with well-directed serves; volleying balls into the middle of targets; playing bingo with numbers that move across the screen above the net; and keeping encroaching Space Invaders away from the net by knocking them down with volleys and smashes. Work your way through the mini-games and your player's attributes improve. There's also a Tennis Academy for more normal training, which sets you some seriously tricky tasks. Add to this the improved AI over previous versions, the chance to play online (Xbox Live) and the true to life player visuals, and Virtua Tennis moves on apace from any of its previous incarnations. Virtua Tennis 3 majors on customisation, from players (create your own to take on all-comers) right up to constructing your own tournaments. This is complemented by the use not only of real player images (and names) but also by the matching of their actual skills and preferences (grass, clay, long game, net-play) to their virtual characters. The depth of the AI, game-play and customisation is matched by the next-gen graphics and audio, both of which reflect the arenas, practice areas and camera angles that bring the video game Virtua variety of tennis close to the real thing. |

SEGA Superstars Tennis (Xbox 360) $5.99 You've spent a sweaty summer afternoon on the tennis court wishing you could face off against AiAi from Super Monkey Ball instead of your slightly out of breath Dad, right? Of course you have! Well, now SEGA is giving you the chance. SEGA has, let's face it, one of the most revered catalogues of intellectual property in the games industry. Now, it does to the tennis game what Nintendo has done for the beat 'em up with Super Smash Bros. Brawl. Namely, it has brought together its best know characters in one place to face off against each other (obviously they use tennis rackets instead of fists and weapons!) Players will find 15 playable SEGA characters up for grabs, including Sonic the Hedgehog, AiAi from Super Monkeyball fame, Ulala of Space Channel 5 and Amigo from Samba De Amigo. They'll square off in areas like the Green Hill Zone or Amigo’s Carnival Park. You won't just find yourself knocking balls back and forth between different SEGA characters, however. You'll also need to get stuck into various tennis-themed mini games. You can swat spheres at zombies in a House of the Dead stage, or knock monkey balls through gates by serving tennis balls at them, to name just a couple. The game comes with a multi-player mode that allows one to four players to take each other on either locally or online. Go on, you always wanted to cream someone at tennis as Sonic. Right...? |

Rockstar Presents Table Tennis (Xbox 360) $3.99 Rockstar serves up a pure videogaming treat with Table Tennis. Indeed, our thumbs hurt so much from playing this game that it’s actually painful for us to type these few laudatory words to tell you why you should buy and play this game with your friends as soon as you possibly can. In fact, we’ll go one step further. We’ll even say that should you have withheld buying an Xbox 360 up to this point - for whatever reason - be you a Microsoft-hater or just plain skint: this game is the reason for you to go out and buy, beg or steal one. It really is that good. It’s like videogames used to be. It’s the kind of game that you and your friends will tan the ar*e off for months to come. This game will be spoken about in ten years time, just as men in their thirties now who should really know better, speak about Kick Off 2 or Sensible Soccer or Speedball 2. It is pure multiplayer videogaming joy. And unlike the aforementioned games, it also has the extra added bonus of being a truly beautiful-looking game. The numerous characters and their little dances of glory, the beautifully rendered stadia and the many other attention to graphical detail touches in the game are a joy to look at (which you never really could say for Sensi or Kick Off 2!). And the many extra little touches in the game, such as the perfectly executed music and oh-so-subtle audio touches (such as when the ball just tickles the net) really top off the overall experience. Really, after playing this game for a good few days in single player mode, or against the odd friend who wandered into our lair, we thought we had almost experienced the full amount of ping pong joy that the Rockstar San Diego guys had engineered for us. Then we played it online, and a whole new world of joy arrived courtesy of Xbox Live. Rockstar Games Presents Table Tennis is perhaps one of the greatest online videogame experiences yet devised by man. If you are not, or have never been, particularly interested in online role-playing games, first person shooters or beat-em-ups, then this is the game to entice you into the online future. Why is the game so fiendishly addictive? It is because the controls are very simple to pick up yet deviously difficult to master. Anyone can play the game. Few can reach ping pong ninja status. But as you try to better your game, you really get involved in the flow of the play, just like you do in real ping pong. You might even be totally talentless, but even so, now and then you will show a flash of brilliance, which keeps you interested in the game. There are perhaps a few minor gripes about the game, which seems almost criminal to even mention. The movement of the actual characters is sluggish, but then, it’s not about the character movement (this is not Virtua Tennis, nor is it trying to be): it’s all about the movement and flow of the ball, and of the arm, and the spin off the bat. Totally immersive, hugely enjoyable Zen-like videogaming bliss. Buy it. Play it. Smile. |
