Learn How To Play Table Tennis the Polite Way
Etiquette isn't just something that we use at the dinner table. It's something that we should use wherever we go. This is true on the field, on the court, on the diamond, or in any other sporting venue. It is most particularly true for table tennis players. You already know how to play table tennis. Do you know how to play it with manners?
First of all, since you'll be warming up with the other player prior to a match, warm up correctly and politely. Don't slam the ball back in your opponent's direction when it's his or her turn to make returns. It's just a warm up and in the grand scheme of things, it's just a game.
Another important thing to remember is to always follow the rules. Even if you're just practicing, it can never hurt to abide by the rules of table tennis. Your opponent will thank you and it is good practice for remembering the rules in a game setting.
You're a great table tennis player, but great players do not celebrate excessively. It's okay to be happy when you score a point or win a game. It's definitely okay to be happy when you win a whole match. It's not okay, however, to over-celebrate. Don't dance around, don't fist pump repeatedly, just move on.
Just like in a real world setting, honesty is the best policy. If the umpire makes a false call in your favor, politely let them know that the other player is entitled to the point.
Be respectful of the umpire's calls, though. If he or she calls a ball out but you thought it was in, don't make a huge fuss over it. Learning how to play table tennis is about learning how to maintain calm. Speak calmly and act mature. An official is much more likely to reverse a wrong call if you treat him or her with decency.
This goes hand-in-hand with treating your opponent with respect during and after the match. Once again, it's just a game. After the match, let the other player know that it was nice matching up against them. Shake hands whether you win or lose.
Good sportsmanship isn't hard to practice and it lets even people who are pulling for your opponents know that you are truly a good person. You'll feel better about yourself and people will enjoy playing against you!
