Improve your Tennis Footwork
In tennis instruction there tends to be a focus on teaching technique. Tennis is a very technical sport and indeed the technical part plays a huge role. This is widely understood by players and coaches. Many recreational players don't realize how important the footwork aspect of the game is though!
Developing solid stroke mechanics is a big part of the tennis puzzle. If you don't get to the ball properly then the best technique in the world can't help you that much! Once people have developed solid stroke mechanics, a majority of their mistakes do come from inadequate footwork!
In order to have great footwork you need a solid basic tennis fitness level. So if you are serious about improving your game, I highly recommend that you think about your overall fitness level and whether or not it is good enough for what you want to achieve in Tennis.
There are plenty of exercises and things you can do to improve general tennis fitness. A basic endurance level is necessary to play Tennis well but the game is played in short intervals of short sprints and therefore the best way to prepare is to do exercises that mimic those kinds of movements.
So let's have a look at some ideas of how you can improve your overall tennis fitness and footwork!
Interval Exercises
One idea would be to short sprints around the court that last anywhere from 5-20 seconds with 20 second rest periods in between. You do not need to always work at 100% effort either. Start slowly and work your way up. Another variation would be to incorporate swinging the racket into these kinds of exercises. For example: Run to the forehand corner, hit a forehand, then run to the backhand corner and hit a backhand. Keep alternating this for 20 seconds, rest for 20 seconds, and go for a few sets like this! This is a sure way to improve your tennis fitness!
Run For Every Ball In Practice And In Matches!
One of the easiest ways to improve your tennis footwork is to get used to running for every ball in practice and in matches. Too many players don't run for balls that they believe they cannot get. Improving footwork, similar to other areas of the game, is about challenging yourself to go beyond what you usually do. If you start running for everything then eventually you will get to a lot more balls.
A great way to work on this in practice is to play all kind of balls that are out by a few feet and play them as well as possible. This way playing normal balls in a match will seem very easy.
Practice Increasing Your Footwork Frequency!
One great thing to work on for your footwork is to calculate the number of steps you use in between your hits. The best players in the world usually also use the most steps in between hits on average. Professional tennis players often make contact with the ground with one of their feet 10-12 times between shots. Intermediate recreational players are usually significantly lower; roughly in the 6-8 steps range!
Ok. So much for improving your tennis fitness and footwork. For more great tips click the following link to get to my tennis instruction website!
