Virtua Tennis 2009 (Wii) $10.99 As what passes for the British summer rolls around once again, it's time to start thinking about dusting off your tennis shorts. For many since 1999, this has meant not heading down to the local court to dodge the broken glass and 'dog left-overs': no, it means getting your thumbs on Virtua Tennis, be that in the arcades, on a Dreamcast or on a high-powered next generation console. As the series has done in previous years, Virtua Tennis 2009 offers up a host of real-life tennis stars across some of the most realistic courts to be found away from...well, real courts! Would Rafa Nadal have survived on grass in the 90's against the likes of Sampras,Becker,Agassi and Kriejeck?
No doubt about his credentials on clay but seeing his brand of tennis on the grass of Wimbledon is a bit putting off. The highlight of grass court tennis was fast and furious,serve and volley tennis played by the likes of Sampras,Ivanesavic,Rafter,Becker etc. Watching people like Nadal and Berdych play the Wimbledon final this time was extremely disappointing. I definitely preffered the Federer-Roddick final of 2009(more than the Federer-Nadal so-called greatest final of 2008).
I would say not even close. But neither would have Hewitt, Nalbandian, Djokovic, Murray, Soderling, Berdych or Delpo.
They just don't have the hands at the net to consistently serve and volley as almost all of their games are designed around the backcourt. It's really no knock on them. The courts, strings and game have just changed, so it's not like it's relevant.
The ball exploded off the court at the old Wimbledon, where even Agassi, who might have been the best returner of all time, only won the tournament once. It was so hard to return serve to anywhere but safely up the middle and right at the approaching volleyer. It had nothing to do with willpower or determination, but moreover whoever served better, and that's really Nadal's weakness.
