Games Approach to Coaching Tennis Video (Copyright 2002) (VHS) $25.95 Games Approach to Coaching Tennis is the newest addition to the American Sport Education Program's (ASEP) Games Approach to Coaching Sport video series. The Games Approach to Coaching Tennis video presents a more in-depth look at the games approach to coaching, which is discussed in the Coaching Youth Tennis book. This revolutionary coaching technique emphasizes learning through play, and it helps coaches create an even more successful tennis experience for their players. Detailed demonstrations of 14 games will help you teach essential tennis tactics for singles and doubles play at the beginning adult and youth levels. In addition to learning the games, coaches and instructors can learn how to: modify games to focus on particular skills and tactics; adjust the difficulty depending on athletes' needs; assess players as they play; actively involve players in the learning process; and teach and refine tennis skills and strategies. Developed in conjunction with the USTA and used in the USA 1,2,3 Instructional Skills Program and USA Team Tennis, the Games Approach to Coaching Tennis video shows you how to teach tennis tactics more effectively than the traditional drills first, play later approach. In the games approach, players participate in modified games rather than repetitive drills. As they play, they learn the tactics and understand how to apply them in a game situation. Players have fun and are motivated to practice in these small-sided games. The Games Approach to Coaching Tennis video helps coaches and instructors discover a great way to coach tennis skills and tactics, and it provides a fun and rewarding experience for their players. About the Author The American Sport Education Program (ASEP) is the most widely used and respected sport education program in the United States. More than 30 states now require ASEP courses for their high school coaches, and more than 200 universities use ASEP courses and resources. Over one million people -- coaches, parents, and directors alike -- have used ASEP products since the program began in 1981. The ASEP headquarters are located in Champaign, Illinois. |

Fun Tennis Games!
Tennis should be fun and you cannot always work on your tennis technique, footwork etc. No matter what age level and playing level you are, I think fun tennis games are hugely important to keep players motivated for further serious tennis instruction.
Mini-Tennis Games
One of the funnest things to do on a tennis court is to play mini-tennis games. These games are played inside the service box, either the full court or only half of the court. There are many different variations for mini-tennis games. In all of those it is not allowed to hit the ball hard. These games are about working the point with a good feel/touch. I like to play all of these games with underspin only where you are not allowed to hit topspin shots but that rule can be changed. Let's have a look at a few mini-tennis games:
1. Ping-Pong Mini-Tennis
In this game you play points inside the service box in a ping-pong kind of way. Basically you have to bounce the ball on your side of the court before it goes over the net, similar to the way a serve is performed in ping-pong or table tennis. You have to let the ball bounce once before you can hit it and then you need to bounce it on your side before it can go over. This game is great fun!
2. Everything Goes Mini-Tennis
Here each player can hit the ball in one of three possible ways: Either as a volley out of the air, as a regular shot after letting it bounce once, or ping-pong style like in the game mentioned above.
Baseline Games
Ok. Now you can't play mini-tennis all day even though it could be fun. Once you are on to the baseline one of the most popular games to play is a regular baseline game to eleven. Here you feed the ball in underhanded and the other player hits the first ball back cross-court after which the point is played out. You keep alternating feeds and play up to eleven. Since there is no real serve, this game often results in long rallies and can be a great way to push yourself physically as well!
Playing For Something Fun
No matter what game you play it is always fun to put something on the line. In our academy we oftentimes play for push-ups, kangaroo jumps or those sorts of things. The idea is that the losers have to do something they would rather not do.
There are thousands of different games that can be played on the tennis court and it is not hard to find out new games. Simply ask some coaches that you are around and you will get plenty of ideas. The important part is to realize that having fun is a big part of this game and also helps in staying motivated to come back and work on more difficult things.
So next time you go out on the court make sure you incorporate at least 5 minutes of fun into your practice routine! For more fun tennis games click the following link to visit my tennis instruction website!
