Orangerie Museum, Tuileries Gardens, Paris – A Fascinating Visit
A public garden located between the Place de la Concorde and the Louvre Museum, the Tuileries gardens is the ideal haven to relax amid lush greenery, a fountain and a pond. Various statues symbolizing mythological events and figures encircle the fountain and pond.
Having served as the place where Parisians could relax, celebrate, meet and promenade, the garden was created by Catherine de Medicis in 1564 as the garden of the Tuileries Palace.
Sculptures called the "Winged Horses" and the "Chevaux Ailee" are perched on both sides of the garden's gate. Jeu de Paume located in the garden was originally an indoor tennis court, but now features temporary art exhibits.
However a prominent attraction in the garden is the Orangerie Museum, also known as Musee de l'Orangerie. This building originally served as a winter greenhouse for the garden's oranges. Afterwards it was chosen by Claude Monet to showcase his testamentary masterpieces. Today, the museum features an unparalleled concentration of masterpieces from Paul Guillaume and Jean Walter collection. Granting a insight into modern art of popular artists featuring Renoir, Cézanne, Matisse,, Rousseau, Picasso, Utrillo, Soutine, Modigliani¸ Laurencin and Derain, the museum was designed by Firmin BoUrgeois.
The building was created in a classic architectural style as it is facing the Place de la Concorde. It is rock-walled on the north side and glass-walled on the south so as to allow as much sunshine as possible into its interior.
The museum has gone through several renovations during which some remnants of one of the few walls that enclosed Paris were found. These blocks of limestone with a yellowish tint are considered a special archaeological discovery.
During the renovations, the upper floor which housed the Paul Guillaume and Jean Walter collections was eliminated. The collection however is now displayed in a new level.
A fresh and stunning feature is the oval rooms encompassing "Les Nymphéas". A small, empty and a vestibule room painted in ivory white leads you to these oval rooms. The effect was included to remove the memory of outdoor colours from one's eyes and allow the full-colour impact of what is to come.
