11 ways you can be an effective team builder
11 ways you can be an effective team builder
By Gerald Mohlabe,www.goaldrivenconsulting.com
The 21 century is the age in which it takes combined efforts in the form of a team to accomplish goals that are so challenging and hard to accomplish. Great leaders are great because of team efforts. These leaders have been achieving great results on the basis of the fact that they are team builders. Their success lies in teamwork.
Let me share with you 11 ways that you must follow to be an effective team builder.
1. You must choose right players
Talent is the most powerful tool to use to achieve great results. Effective team builders have right players with right talent. The first and foremost thing you need to do, if you want be effective in team building, is to look for players with potential and pick them to be in your team.
You cannot build a successful team on players who do not have talent. You want winners in your team, choose players with the potential to be winners.
2. You must know the vision of the team
You cannot build a winning team if you don't know the vision, the history, the culture, and the purpose of the team or the organization. If you really want to be an effective team builder, you need to know where the team is striving to go, and why it is striving to get there.
All that you need to do is to start where the team is. Vision has the power to get you moving in the right direction on which you can take your team. It also has the power to keep you and your team going on in spite of obstacles, frustrations and mountains on your path to the top.
3. You must know the level of your players
Successful team builders know the strengths and weaknesses of their players. They know the level of each player on the team. They also know that there are players who don't know what to do and how to do it. These kind of players need the direction of the team builder.
Team builders know that there are players who know what to do and how to do it but they need the coaching of the team builder to perform to their fullest potential. The other kind of players that successful team builders know are those who work well without the leader's direction but all that they need is the leader's encouragement and support. Lastly, the other kind of players they know are those who need to lift the load of the leader. They need to be delegated to perform certain tasks. They derive pleasure and fulfillment from being delegated by the leader.
You must work closely with every individual player on the team to know what they need. Know their level and you will be in a better position to be an effective team builder.
4. You must invest in your team
Effective team builders take their time to develop their team so that they can experience multiplied results. Spend resources like money, your energy and time to take your team to training, conferences and seminars.
When you pay the price to develop your team, they will feel so special and confident to be the best they are capable of becoming.
5. You must take hard decisions
Great team builders do not ignore issues of ineffectiveness, incompetence, and poor performance displayed by certain members of the team. They deal decisively with players who are a weak link on the team.
There are members of the team who continue being ineffective and incompetent even after being trained, coached, and developed through relevant programs and resources. You must learn to take hard decisions against such team members. That is, get rid of them because they are bringing a negative impact upon the team's performance. Underperforming members will always slow down your leadership.
6. You must lead
If you want to build an effective team, learn how to lead. Leadership is the determining factor of either success or failure, effectiveness or ineffectiveness in every team. Successful teams have strong leaders who provide effective leadership.
A good leader motivates, inspires, and influences his team to give their all to the greater good of the team. With good leadership comes good performance and good results. An effective leader creates positive changes on the team. He is the agent of change. He or she is not satisfied with the status quo on the team.
Effective team builders move things through their leadership. They focus on things like vision, morale, enthusiasm, attitude, hope, performance, momentum, and motivation.
7. You must be a good communicator
Communication is one of the cornerstones for effective leadership. You must know how to communicate the game plan to your team. You also must know how to communicate the vision of your team or your organization.
Effective team builders have good communication skills. They know that the most important thing in communication is simplicity. They Keep their message clear and simple when they convey it to their team.
You must learn how to communicate your concerns and hurts clearly and effectively to difficult team members. You must also know how to communicate discipline to your team.
8. You must commit yourself to personal growth and development
Successful team builders grow and develop in their character, in their skill, and in their leadership. They are committed to excellence. They attend seminars and conferences in their area of expertise. They buy tapes, books and material to help them grow and develop.
Good team builders don't deceive themselves by saying, "I have arrived." They admit wrongdoing and accept correction from the members of their team. If you want to be an effective team builder, you need to commit yourself to continuous personal growth and development.
9. You must command the respect of the team
Your team building will be successful if your character is well nurtured and development. Your team cannot respect you if your character is flawed.
Respect is a quality that you must work hard for and earn from your team. Team members cannot respect the leader who makes promises and fails to keep them. Embrace integrity and honesty and your team will consequently respect you.
When you have earned respect from your team, they will give you the privilege of influencing their lives. Work on your character and you will be an effective team builder.
10. You must provide necessary support needed for success
Team players need appreciation, acknowledgement, motivation and encouragement to reach their fullest potential. This is the kind of support they need from you as their team leader. Some of them need you to say, "It will be alright".
11. You must excel in problem-solving
Effective team builders possess problem-solving skills. They anticipate problems before they come. They prepare themselves to face them with courage. They have victory mentality.
Great team builders do not deny when problems occur. Instead, they acknowledge that they are there and they take action to solve them accordingly.

Sustaining Competitive Advantage For Blacks Leisure Group
Introduction
The Blacks Leisure Group is operating in one of the most competitive industries today. The leisure industry encompasses a range of services and products such as horse racing, fitness classes, casinos, cinemas, music concerts, water sports, land sports, videogames, bird watching and others. However, these products may be classified under the following major categories; tourism, sports, recreation and hospitality. Owing to the diversity in this industry, it is very necessary for Blacks Leisure Group to familiarize itself with all the latest industry trends, competitor information and consumer preferences in order to be a market leader. The report shall examine all the issues surrounding competitive advantage in the industry. (Barney, 1997)
Importance of developing and sustaining competitive advantage for Blacks Leisure Group
Development and sustenance of competitive advantage is crucial to any business in the Leisure industry, consequently, the same applies to the company under analysis. Blacks Leisure group ought to sustain competitive advantage because of the following: First of all, the world has become increasingly interconnected. Globalisation has presented new challenges to leisure companies within the UK and beyond. Some come from the rapidly industrialised East (Asian continent) while others hail from the well established developed nations such as the US. These companies are looking to expand their service base and are therefore tapping into the company's market.
Blacks Leisure Group should ensure that they sustain competitive advantage because if they fail to do so then online companies might drive them out of business. The advent of technology and the proliferation of the internet have further aggravated the situation. It is necessary for Blacks to ensure that they can expand their level of distribution in a cost efficient manner just like the online companies do. As if all the latter competitors are not enough to drive new changes in the industry, the company has to improve its product offering in order to battle it out with some of the larger Leisure groups. These Leisure companies have very large brand names and may have undue advantage over Blacks owing to their image and company strength. (Grant, 2005)
In the wake of the competition emanating from every single direction, Blacks should develop and sustain an advantage or competitive advantage over its players in the industry. This is because the market has evolved, gone are the days when companies would simply focus on their clients alone. Marketers and managers should not underestimate the effects that competition has because if they fail to do, then their profits will decline. The situation may aggravate and cause fluctuating sales of the respective products. Thereafter, it is likely that the company will be pushed out of business. Consequently, Black Leisure group should be vigilant about establishing a sound market positions and managing their brand selectively.
Environmental marketing dynamics and the need for strategic change in order to sustain competitive advantage
The world has slowly changed its gaol posts with regard to the definition of who real competitors are. Consequently, there are so many dynamics that come into play when trying to select which companies are Black Leisure's competitors. The company may assume that its competitors are other Leisure groups in the country. However, there are potential entrants that may not have been considered. Taking the example of what has happened in the reading industry, group leaders such as Barnes and Nobel used up a substantial amount of their resources establishing large chains. However, the company underestimated the effect of technology because during the late nineties, another industry player came up with a way of accessing numerous books without spending too much on inventory. This company was called Amzon.com. The same situation applies to the Leisure industry. Many leisure consumers want to access services in the most convenient way possible. Online transactions have caused many consumers to leave tangible companies such as Blacks. They are now taking most of their business to the internet. Blacks should give online transactions precedence because this has become a vital part of the marketing environment today. (Baird, 1994)
In order to understand one's market dynamics, it is necessary to look at competition through a wide range of angles. Competition may be defined in relation to the following; Industry concept or Marketing concept
Industry concept
Marketers ought to analyse their respective industries o determine whether they fall under the following
- Pure Monopoly
- Oligopoly
- Monopolistic competition
- Pure competition
Purely monopolistic industries are those that have only one company offering the service or product, Oligopolistic industries are those ones that have largely sized companies that offer the same commodities. On the other hand, monopolistic competition refers to those industries where there are a variety of products or services and competition is sustained through offering the products in a superior manner. Pure competition exists in industries where the competitors offer the same product or service. Consequently, competition is based on advertisement and marketing. (Dyer and Ernest, 1991)
Taking the example of Blacks Leisure Group, its industry falls under the monopolistic competition. In this case, there is market segmentation. Consequently, the company offers only a specific range of services to the consumer in a superior manner. The dynamics that affect such an industry (monopolistic competition) are quite diverse. The first issue that one should consider is entry vs. exit barriers within the industry. The Leisure industry has very minimal entry barriers owing to the fact that it has low capital requirements and patents are not that important too. On top of that, exit barriers are rather high because it likely that the assets will be obsolete by the time one is leaving the exit industries. These dynamics need to be incorporated by Blacks in order to stay ahead.
The next environmental issue that should be considered by Blacks is the level of vertical integration. In the Leisure industry, there are numerous cases of vertical integration. Some companies opt to integrate their leisure equipment such as sports gear, they rent those facilities to their clients and also coordinate their accommodation among others. This trend has become very common but Blacks should avoid this approach because certain parts of the value chain are inflexible. Consequently, it is better for the company to outsource some of its pressing activities. This allows the company to focus on the services that it does best while saving a substantial portion of its budget on the specialty service.
Lastly, different industries have different levels of globalisation. The leisure industry is one of the most heavily hit. This has caused a large number of these companies to compete on a global platform. Their services, marketing approaches and other company ideas have been tailored to embrace the issue of globalisation. Blacks Leisure group is not an exception, the company depends on numerous foreigners for business. Consequently, its marketing approach is tailored towards the international market. The company needs to break into other market segments owing to the fact that numerous leisure companies do the same. It would be necessary to check on some other consumers that may be interested in their services. (Aaker, 1984)
Market concept
Marketers consider competition in a different light. However, they define competitors as any company or entity that meet the same consumer need. Consequently, even if the services under consideration may not seem related, they may qualify as competitors. These competitors can be divided d into various categories depending on how closely relate their commodities are.
Taking the example of Blacks Leisure Group, the company cannot ascertain that its only competitors are the ones that offer similar leisure service. While these companies may actually fall in eth same category as Blacks, one cannot under look the diversity of the Leisure industry. Some of the closely related companies include hotels, camping guides and tour operators. However, other leisure products still meet the same consumer need and these include, television show companies, movie companies, video games, music or radio companies, fitness centres, night clubs, casinos, tennis operators and many others. Consequently, it is very advisable for company to shift from defining competitors in a conventional way as the marketing environment has changed. Those companies that seem to come from a totally different industry may end up being the most influential in that respective industry . It is therefore necessary to ensure that one frequently monitors these different competitors because they could take first place.
After identifying all the competitors that fall in the same category, then it is necessary to asses the strategies, objectives and strengths needed to sustain competitive advantage within ones' domain. (Barney, 1991)
When analysing competition, it is necessary to determine which companies are following the same strategic path as Black Leisure group. The company could look at any of the following items; whether the competitor under consideration has a wide or narrow line compared to Blacks. A larger line always possesses greater competition than a narrower line. On top of that, the company could analyse the manufacturing costs of its competitor, if they have the same costs, then the company ought to watch out for it. This should then be followed by an analysis of service offering. If the company offers a high quality then it is definitely a force worth reckoning. This should be followed by a consideration of the kind of price on offer. Those companies that have the same features as the company under consideration in terms of the latter four factors will fall under the same strategic group.
After doing an analysis of the strategies used by its' competitors then the company should look out for the objectives of their competitors. Some companies are driven by the need for growing their market share, others place more precedence on increasing their profitability, alternatively, other companies need to be service leaders while others need to develop their technologies. Blacks then needs to look at their competitor's strengths, this refers to how large their share of the market is, they should also look at the level of support which the company has garnered in terms of support for their products. By examining all the latter issues, Blacks can identify some loopholes among its competitors and establish itself in the market. (Benter and Booms, 1981)
How Porters five forces and Value Chain analysis can assist in understanding the marketing environment and competitive advantage
Porters five forces
The porter's five forces are as follows
Threat of rivalry
Blacks needs to worry about this generic force because the leisure industry is highly competitive. Entry barriers are not very high. Additionally, investors have high stakes if they leave. As if this is not enough, capital costs are also strenuous. The overall effect is frequent advertisement battles, product introductions and frequent price battles. In order to stay ahead of it competitors, Blacks needs to become very aggressive. There is very fierce rivalry in this industry and only the most vigilant company garner enough support.
Threats of new entrants
In the leisure industry, it is relatively easy to enter into the industry. The reasons for this is that capital cost requirements are not as high as they are in other industries like aviation. Additionally, patent requirements in the leisure industry are not that high too. This means that Blacks has to be ready for intense competition. The company ought to look for a unique selling point in order to sustain competitive advantage. (Porter, 1985)
Threats of buyers
Owing to the fact that the Leisure industry is highly differentiated, then the company has potential to do well because they can offer their services in a superior manner to their clients. However, it is relatively easy to switch from one leisure company to another, this gives the buyers a higher advantage, Blacks Leisure Group should tackle this moderate buyer strength by offering superior quality products that the consumers cannot reject.
Threats of suppliers
The company operates in an industry segment that has many substitutes for the products consequently, suppliers do into have a lot of bargaining power. One of the actions that the company can make to cope with the threats of suppliers is by teaming up with other leisure groups to be more influential in their respective market.
Threats of substitutes
There are numerous substitutes in the leisure industry. Therefore, Blacks should invest in research to forecast some of this future threats.
Value chain analysis
Inbound logistics; this involves, transportation, material handling material storage, communication, testing and information systems that are related to the supplier. Outbound logistics refer to all the latter that are related to the consumer. Black Leisure Group needs to consider how it can outsource its information systems which can be improve performance here. Marketing and sales technologies; refer to all media, audio and communications involved in selling the product. The company should consider incorporating technological system in service operations. Operations technologies; refer to the process and materials involved in the service offering of the company. Blacks Leisure Group should consider merging some of their business units to sustaining competitive advantage (Thompson & Strickland III, 1992)
Conclusion
The Black Leisure Group operates in a highly competitive market. Consequently, the company's environmental dynamics cannot be ignored. Some of the things that the company can do to sustain competitive advantage include offering superior services, outsourcing their inbound and outbound logistic, integrating business units, teaming up with leisure groups to strengthen their buyer power from suppliers, intensifying technological advancements and encompassing the global market more aggressively. All these steps will go a long way in enhancing their position in the market. (Amit, 2007)

Meditation Guide:Meditation Techniques and Scientifically Proven Benefits
People are more curious about meditation lately because each day we learn about different benefits of meditation. Although meditation techniques have common benefits, some techniqes can be more beneficial in some cases.
If you are planning to start meditation or just curious if you could really benefit from it; first you need to clarify what you expect from meditation.
We cannot point one technique as the best, but you can choose which is the best for you. Read about different techniques to choose which you can keep on without quitting because some techniques require more time, some needs quidance and some needs tools, so you need to find out which is suitable for you. Consistency will help you to get the best from the meditation technique you choose.
If you want to be sure about the benefits of meditation, here are some scientific researches about different meditation techniques which will be helpfull for beginners.
Mindfulness Meditation Increases Positive Emotional State:
The research team led by Richard Davidson, Vilas Professor of psychology and psychiatry at UW-Madison investigated the positive changes in the brain during and after the meditation.
In the experimental group, participants receieved mindfulness meditation fromJon Kabat-Zinn and the control group didn't receive training.Meditation group attended a weekly class and they practised for an hour at home for 6 days a week.
The team measured electrical activity in the frontal part of the brain which is associated with lower anxiety and a more positive emotional state. As expected the meditation group developed more activity at that part of the brain.

Mindfulness Meditation Decreases Perception of Pain and Improves Cognitive Processing:
Fadel Zeidan, a post-doctoral researcher at Wake Forest University School of Medicine, and a former doctoral student at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte and co-authors Susan K. Johnson, Zhanna David and Paula Goolkasian from the Department of Psychology at UNC Charlotte, and Bruce J. Diamond from William Patterson University studied if a brief meditation can be helpfull on cognition.
Participants meditated 20 minutes each day for 4 days and control group attempted a reading session at the same period.
Prior to and following the mindfulness meditation and reading sessions, both the meditation and control group were tested to examine assessing mood, memory, visual attention, attention processing, and vigilance. Mindfulness meditation improved cognitional skills ten times better of the Mindfulness meditation participants after training than the control group.
"This seems to be strong evidence for the idea that we may be able to modify our own minds to improve our cognitive processing — most importantly in the ability to sustain attention and vigilance — within a week's time."explained Zeidan.
Through this research the meditation and control group participants' sensitivity to pain also examined before and after the sesssions by employing harmless electrical shocks Meditation decreased the perception of "high pain" levels, and also reduced the perception of "low" pain levels
"We knew already that meditation has significant effects on pain perception in long-term practitioners whose brains seem to have been completely changed — we didn't know that you could do this in just three days, with just 20 minutes a day," Zeidan said.

Buddhist Meditation Improves Visiopatial Abilities:
The researchers led by psychologist Maria Kozhevnikov of George Mason University focused on two types of buddhist meditation Deity Yoga and Open Presence to find out if meditation improves our imagery skills.
In the experiment Deity Yoga and Open Presence practitioners meditated for 20 minutes and the control group rested at the same period. Participants tested before and after sessions about mental rotation abilities and visual memory.
Before meditation sessions although the participants were practitioners of Deity Yoga or Open Presence their test results were similar to the control group, which means meditation doesn't have a long lasting affect.
After meditation sessions, the results show that the Deity Yoga parctitioners improved their visiopatial abilities dramatically.
Buddhist Insight Meditation Increases Grey Matter In The Brain:
The research led by Sara Lazar, assistant in psychology at Massachusetts General Hospital and co-author of the study Jeremy Gray, assistant professor of psychology at Yale studied to find out if meditation increased the grey matter in the brain.
Gray said. "The study participants were people with jobs and families. They just meditated on average 40 minutes each day, you don't have to be a monk."
Magnetic resonance imaging proved that practising meditation regularly helps to increase the sensory, auditory and visual abilities and internal perception and also reduction of aging effects of brain.
They mentioned that different kinds of meditation may have different affects on cortical thickening.

Yoga Has a Positive Effect on Mood:
A study led by lead author Chris Streeter, MD, an associate professor of psychiatry and neurology at BUSM examined if yoga has a positive effect on mood.
One group of participants practiced yoga three times a week for one hour and the control group just walked at the same period. Both were followed for 12 weeks scanning their brains with using magnetic resonance spectroscopic (MRS) imaging. They were also asked to assess their psychological state at several points throughout the study.
"Over time, positive changes in these reports were associated with climbing GABA levels," said Streeter. Low GABA levels are associated with depression and other widespread anxiety disorders.

Integrative Body-Mind Training (IBMT):Helps to regulate your behaviour through your desires
A team of Chinese researchers led by Yi-Yuan Tang of Dalian University of Technology in collaboration with University of Oregon psychologist Michael I. Posner. and UO psychology professor Mary K. Rothbart focused on IBMT to find out what
Posner, who last fall received a National Medal of Science said:"The importance of our findings relates to the ability to make structural changes in a brain network related to self regulation. The pathway that has the largest change due to IBMT is one that previously was shown to relate to individual differences in the person's ability to regulate conflict."

Vipassana meditation
A study by psychology and psychiatry professor Richard Davidson of the UW-Madison School of Medicine and Public Health and the Waisman Center and his research group examined whether conscious mental training can affect attention.
Because the attentional resources are limited when two visual signals are shown, people miss the second one much of the time. "The attention momentarily goes off-line. Your attention gets stuck on the first target, then you miss the second one " Davidson says.
Three months of intensive training in Vipassana meditation, which focuses on reducing mental distraction and improving sensory awareness. improved people's ability to detect a second target.
"The results of the study show that devoting fewer neural resources to the first target leaves enough left over to attend to another target that follows shortly after it", Davidson says

Zen Meditation Helps You for Pain Management:
A research by Joshua A. Grant, a doctoral student in the Department of Physiology, co-authored the paper with Pierre Rainville, a professor and researcher at the Université de Montréal and it's affiliated Institut universitaire de gériatrie de Montréal studied on Zen meditation to find out its effects on pain.
"Through training, Zen meditators appear to thicken certain areas of their cortex and this appears to be underlie their lower sensitivity to pain," says lead author Joshua A. Grant and noted that meditative practices could be helpful in general for pain management, for preventing normal age-related grey matter reductions or potentially for any condition where the grey matter is compromised such as stroke.

Zen Meditation Helps to Clear the Mind Faster After Distruction
Researcher Giuseppe Pagnoni, PhD, Emory assistant professor of psychiatry and behavioral sciences, and co-workers at Emory University School of Medicine studied how interruption affect the thoughts of meditators.
There were two group of participants, one group was Zen practitioners and the other one was control group. Participants brain was scanned during the task with functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI). Participants was distracted during meditation.
Zen practitioners brain turn back to baseline before distruction faster than the control group.
This suggests that the regular practice of meditation may enhance the capacity to limit the influence of distracting thoughts. This skill could be important in conditions such as attention deficit and hyperactivity disorder, obsessive-compulsive disorder, anxiety disorder and major depression, characterized by excessive rumination or an abnormal production of task-unrelated thoughts," Pagnoni says.
