Mario Sports Mix - Wii Game $34.99 Mario has a long history in sports and he has featured in games based on golf, tennis, baseball and go-karting, to name just a few. Now Mario's tackling four different sports at the same time on the Wii console. The game Mario Sports Mix lets players jump into games of hockey, basketball, volleyball or dodgeball. Mario Sports Mix presents these four familiar sports - but with a Mario twist. Players can choose from a variety of playable Mushroom Kingdom characters and can even challenge Mario and friends directly by playing as their own Mii characters. Each game contains a number of Mushroom Kingdom power-ups that can turn the tide of a game in an instant, such as banana peels, green shells and even mini mushrooms. In over-the-top Mario sports fashion, each character can unleash his or her unique special move that ranges from Mario's fire dunk in basketball to Yoshi's rainbow attack in dodgeball. Players can also elect to hold their matches in a number of interesting venues. For example, the Wario Factory has conveyor belts that affect how the players move on the court, while in Peach's Castle, fountains go up and down to block certain areas of the net in Volleyball. Up to four friends who are in the same room can join in the fun, while up to four players (one or two at each location) can compete over a broadband Internet connection via Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection. Players can play online against friends with whom they have traded friend codes, or anonymously against other opponents. Multiplayer modes require additional controllers, which are sold separately. For ages 3 years and over. |

Mario Sports Mix (Wii) $34.99 Mario has always been a bit of a sportsman. Which kind of defies his portly figure really, but he’s taken part in quite a few activities all the same. Football, baseball, tennis, golf… in fact, there isn’t a lot that the Nintendo mascot hasn’t done. Mario Sports Mix on the Wii aims to check almost every other outdoor activity off the list, in a move that seems a bit like fast-tracking the things to do before you die. These four games are guaranteed to provide hours of fun with friends though - volleyball, basketball, ice hockey and dodgeball have all been given Super Mario-themed twists and settings to make it all a little less boring. As you would expect from past Mario sports titles the rules of each game largely remains the same, but in Mario’s world you can collect coins to build up bonus points, use Koopa shells to attack your opponents and use other iconic special items to mix the action up a little bit. That’s to say nothing of the signature moves that each character has. From Luigi to Yoshi and everyone inbetween, if they get riled enough to use one of these special attacks, you can be sure that you’re not stopping them. And then you have the environments - DK Dock will make the volleyball court slide from left to right, while Bowser Jr Blvd’s basketball court feature bonus circles that offer good (and bad) rewards. With co-operative modes for up to four players and competitive two-on-two matchups, Mario Sports Mix is going to be the ultimate in Mushroom Kingdom Sports Entertainment. |

Wii Sports - Wii Game $19.99 But whether you're an experienced pro in every sport or a newcomer to the field of play, Wii Sports is an experience that you'll want to keep coming back to again and again! In Tennis, you'll grab the controller like a racket and swing - the game will register forehands, backhands, volleys, lobs, slices, spin and power depending on how fast you swing and at what angle. Baseball will have you gripping the controller like a bat and swatting fastballs out of the park in a home run derby. In Golf you'll step up to the tee, hold the controller like a golf club and swing naturally to smack the ball onto the green. In Bowling, players raise the Wii Remote in their hand just like a bowling ball, and then swing their arms to roll the ball. When Boxing, using the Nunchuk controller as one glove and the Wii Remote as the other, players dodge, weave and punch their opponents. Players can use their own Mii caricatures in the game and play them against their friends' Miis for a more personalised experience. As players improve, their Miis' skill levels will increase, so that they can see exactly how much better they've become. For ages 7 years and over. |

The Market for the Nintendo Wii
Sales for the Nintendo Wii have exploded since 2006 when it was released and they don’t seem to be slowing down. In fact in many parts of the world there is still more of a demand for them than the supply. In areas where they haven’t been released yet people are paying for them on the black market. Many people in Canada are on a waiting list to get their hands on one.
The company itself didn’t even envision it being as popular as it is. While they did anticipate being highly successful they also knew they had some stiff competition from both the Xbox and Playstation 3. However, there are many benefits that the Nintendo Wii offers that those don’t. The fact that anyone from the age of 3 to 105 have played the games successfully really says a great deal about the Universal use of it.
Even though Nintendo doesn’t need it, many celebrities and professionals around the world have admitted to playing the Wii. Some of them you wouldn’t expect such as Queen Elizabeth II. Others include tennis pro Serena Williams, movie writer and director Steven Spielberg, and comedian Conan O’Brien.
Some believe that Nintendo wasn’t sure of themselves at all with the Wii. They assume that is why they limited distribution of them in the beginning. It was a smart move though in the event that there were unforeseen problems. They didn’t want a mass recall on their hands after all the money they had invested in these gaming systems.
Others believe it was a powerful marketing strategy. After all the demand for a product always seems to increase when the supply isn’t readily available. By only releasing a set number at a time it really get the buzz going for them. Yet with the frenzy that took place in late December you would have thought that there were only a handful of them being released at a given time.
Therefore it may surprise you to discover there were 1.8 million of them being released each month. With the presales in the United States that took place in November of 2006 where people could order them in advance though there was a backlog from the very start.
More than 28 million homes and businesses around the world now own a Nintendo Wii. There is no doubt that it will continue to be a very successful product. You can be sure Nintendo won’t stop here either. They are going to continue adding new features and making modifications. They know their competitors are closely on their heels and they don’t want to be removed from their seat at the top of the mountain.
One feature you will see down the road is the Nintendo Wii available in various colors. It has only been offered in white so far. However in the next few years you will also see it in black, lime green, silver, and a bright shiny red. These colors were to be part of the initial release. However, Nintendo decided not to do so due to the overwhelming demand for the gaming systems. They wanted to focus on meeting that demand rather than color specifications.
There has been plenty of consumer feedback regarding the ability to play DVD’s on the Wii as well. It is in the works to release and updated version down the road that will play both DVD’s and Blu-Ray discs. This project was to be started in 2008 but has been moved back to 2010. That way they can continue to work on meeting the demand for the current model that is out there.
To their credit, Nintendo has continued to make the Wii very affordable. Generally you can get the gaming console for about $250. With the high demand for it they could easily be making more profits than they are. However, their goal is to provide a way for families to have fun. They are certainly continuing to do so in every possible way.

The Pirates Of Pendants
Devon Turnbull, a young designer who is part of a Manhattan fashion collective called Nom de Guerre, is not what you'd call a mama's boy -- but he does like wearing her pearls. A few years ago, when she gave them to him, he had all 109 restrung onto a gold-link chain that hangs below his waist, like something between a prayer shawl and an overextended rosary. He took up pearl wearing for complex spiritual reasons having to do with Transcendental Meditation and a system of Vedic astrology called Jyotish. ''But I also just always liked pearls,'' Turnbull says.
At first his friends told him ''Oh, come on, you're a straight guy. You can't go out wearing pearls like that.'' Latex Leggings His simple response, ''Why not?''
It would be hard to argue with that in this Beckhamesque moment of masculine adornment. Ever since the bling bang, a ''why not?'' kind of attitude has prevailed. All kinds of men -- from the designers Stefano Gabbana and Domenico Dolce to the tennis player Marat Safin -- feel comfortable flaunting jewelry.
Perhaps it's because the look has morphed into something much gentler than gangsta style, including an eclectic mix of tarnished pendants, historical icons, ethnic beads, Brazilian wish bracelets, red kabbalah strings, crystals, bones, rubber, leather, onyx and odd semiprecious stones -- in other words, anything and everything. One label, Rust, makes leather necklaces with silver charms inspired by Neolithic tools. Another, Black Sheep and Prodigal Son, has scrimshaw-like cameos from piano keys on men's stickpins. Gia Unearthen fuses stones like blue tourmaline and clear quartz with discarded bullet casings. And in Paris, while Ann Demeulemeester was sending male models in pearls down her runway, Rene Talmon l'Armee was selling black Tahitian pearls for men, attached to silver skulls on rough-hewn silver chains.
''It's all about originality and handcrafting,'' says Evan Yurman, 25, who designs men's jewelry for his father, David Yurman. A few years ago, the only men's jewelry the company offered were classic gift pieces. Now the line has expanded to include leather bracelets, black onyx dog tags and rugged box-chain necklaces with crosses and Stars of David. ''I like things that make you think about culture and history,'' says Yurman, who freely mixes religious iconography around his own neck.
Mary Jo Pane is into the religious, too. She started Miracle Icons six years ago as a way of tapping into her Catholicism and what she calls the culture of spiritual evolution. ''It began as a woman's business, but now it's 75 percent men,'' Pane says of her line of vintage pendants and charms that hang three to an oxidized silver chain. Her clients include Johnny Depp, Jake Gyllenhaal and Matthew McConaughey. ''It's not about shiny things,'' Pane adds. ''It's about wearing things that are personal.''
Italo Zucchelli, the creative director of men's wear at Calvin Klein, who often wears a ring inscribed with poetry and a crystal on his neck from an important old friend, says, ''It's about wearing something with meaning.'' But then, doesn't every piece of jewelry -- from yellow rubber and red string bracelets to gaudy signet rings inherited from illustrious ancestors -- have a story?
Pre-Diddy, women had the accessories that did most of the talking. Men who wanted to impress were stuck with Rolex watches and Tiffany zentai suit. Then, suddenly, every male with authority issues (in other words, most) was piercing and tattooing, showing a primordial and tribal male urge for meaningful adornment. Ironically, though, it's women who remain skeptical about men in jewelry. They think it shows an untrustworthy amount of vanity. Women, not men, they insist, are supposed to do all the jingling and jangling.
''It really depends on the man,'' says Donna Karan. ''If it's in character, jewelry can look great. But if a guy doesn't know Lycra Leggings how to wear it, it can look pretty stupid.'' Indeed, Details magazine recently stuck it to Colin Farrell, Wilmer Valderrama and Jeremy Piven, among others, suggesting that they shift focus from accessorizing to acting.
Still, Kassandra Lao, a young designer who's been living with Devon Turnbull for several years, has never had a problem with pearls. ''It's who he is,'' she said the other night while they were shopping together in a Whole Foods in Midtown Manhattan. He does, she added somewhat sheepishly, wear them inside his shirt.
As they walked the aisles, a sweet young couple in love, there was a gentle clinking beneath Turnbull's parka. ''What kind of vegetables do you want for dinner?'' he asked. ''Butternut squash or carrots?''

Get the Power of Word-of-Mouth Working for You: Build a Referral Program for Long-Term Sales Success
Building great relationships with clients is a cornerstone of a successful career in sales. Achieving this means more than just a benefit for your customers in knowing that they can count on you for the very best in product knowledge and advice, plus after-sales support. You stand to gain as well when those satisfied customers tell their friends and colleagues about you. Referrals have a unique capability in that they have the potential to generate new clients for you without you having to seek out those clients first.
Given that kind of power, you'd think that everyone out there would be making good use of referrals, right? Surprisingly very few businesses out there capitalize on word-of-mouth from their existing customers. I've found this to be the case in my discussions with groups during Engage sales training exercises, and I'm not alone. Business guru Tom Peters recalls how he once polled executives at a workshop and asked them what percentage of their customers were giving their businesses all they could, including referrals. He was stunned by the answer: "I knew they would be quite a bit lower than 100%, but I've found that most executives estimate that only somewhere between 0 and 25% of customers are giving them all the business they could. The numbers are even lower for referral sources."
There are a few reasons for this. Among them is that classics mistakes are often committed when asking for referrals (I address that here in a follow-up article). Another is that many simply aren't persistent enough and referrals end up being more of a piecemeal exercise than something methodical and focused. This is why I recommend that sales people and business owners consider developing an in-house referral program. You have a great story to tell about your company, your products or services, as well as the way you work with customers. So you owe it to yourself to make sure everyone gets to hear that story.
Think value
Referrals often happen when you first provide something of value to your customers. I saw a great example of this recently when I did a wine tour of Ontario's Niagara region. I noticed that many winemakers there were almost as eager to tell me great things about other wines produced in the area as they were about selling the benefits of their own products. At first, I found this a bit odd. I mean why would they take time to tell me great things about their competition? Later on, after I returned home, I noticed how that helpful gesture had shaped my behaviour. Not only did I speak highly among friends about that individual winemaker, I also had great things to say about the entire winemaking region (not to mention the added fact that the region's Cabernet Franc really is a must-buy for red wine enthusiasts). Moreover, I noticed that was most eager to make a return visit to those wineries who gave me all the great tips on good wines that were also being made by their area competitors. So as you can see, there's good karma in providing solid referrals.
Think free
Free offers are timelessly powerful. I've benefitted from this first-hand, not just as a consumer but as a business owner, too. For example, I have a client who recently referred me to someone in her organization. To show my appreciation, I sent a free ticket to a much-sought after Engage event. Another great example comes from another of my clients who sends free gasoline cards (which you can well imagine was greatly appreciated when gas prices skyrocketed to $4 per gallon). Included with the card was a little note that said 'you filled up my tank, now it's my turn to fill up yours.' Little things like that—gestures that don't need to cost a fortune—can really go a long way to cementing a great business relationship.
Think creative
Consumer loyalty programs are another great way to generate repeat business. There are plenty of examples out there, from points programs to gift certificates and special discounts to returning customers. Why limit those programs just to those who already know you? Be creative. If you offer gift certificates to existing clients, include an empty spot where the recipient can choose to forward the offer to a friend or colleague who might not be familiar with your products or services. This way, everyone wins. Your client helps a friend, the friend saves some money and gains a great new business relationship by getting in contact with you, and you gain a new customer.
Here's another example. The local tennis club to which I belong began a new membership drive. They emailed existing members and included in the P.S. section the following note: be sure to refer a friend and get one month of your tennis membership free. Tennis memberships aren't cheap, so that was a great offer. So I responded to the call to action, sharing the names of all the people who I thought might be interested in joining. This program was so effective that members were jostling for pole position to be to first to share names.
Think persistent
It's important to remind customers often about who you are and what you do. After all, people get busy and are easily distracted by other things, so it's in your best interest to find ways to remain on the radar of those with who you do business. One great example of this comes courtesy of one of my clients who sell point-of-sale software to restaurants. Every month they issue a newsletter in which they showcase a success story involving one of their restaurateur clients. This gets distributed to other restaurant owners in the area. This helps build a sense of community, but it also helps to remind readers that my client's point-of-sale software would be ideal for their restaurant.
