The Best Orlando Has to Offer
So you're headed to Orlando... but where to start? You'll find such a wealth of fantastic resorts and restaurants it can be difficult to choose exactly what you wish to indulge in. How best can you plan a visit in which each day comes with the finest this marvelous vacation spot has to offer? In order to help you in making the overwhelming decisions of where to stay and what places to dine, here are what I believe to be Orlando's best offerings:
Best Resort Pools
Disney's Yacht and Beach Club's Storm-alongBay, a three-acre miniature water park
The Walt Disney World's Swan and Dolphin's grotto-style lagoon pool
The Volcano Pool at Disney's Polynesian Resort with its luxuriant waterfall, smoking peak, and perfect views of Cinderella's Castle
The boulder-strewn wonderland at the Disney's Wilderness Lodge with its own erupting geyser
The lush pool at the Hyatt Regency Grand Cypress cooled by twelve waterfalls
The JW Marriott's Lazy River, 24,000 square feet of winding delight
The sophisticated pools at the Waldorf Astoria Orlando with luxury cabana options.
Best Deluxe Resort
On Disney property it's the Grand Floridian with its upscale Victorian ambience and lagoonside setting facing the Magic Kingdom. Off-property it's the Waldorf Astoria Orlando where you may never even feel the need to go to the parks. At Universal go for the Portofino Bay Hotel, with its unsurpassed atmosphere of an Italian seaside resort.
Best Disney Deluxe Villa Resort
Disney's Bay Lake Tower at the Contemporary Resort with is hip, modern look, monorail access, and spectacular views of the Magic Kingdom. Or the Disney's Animal Kingdom Villas where exotic animals are roaming just outside your guest room.
Best Atmosphere
Disney's Animal Kingdom Lodge, where hundreds of animals roam the savanna and the air is pulsating to the beat of African drums. Running a close second is Universal's Portofino Bay Hotel, where guests are transported to a seaside Italian village.
Best Lobby
How to choose? Three make the cut: Disney's Wilderness Lodge, Disney's Grand Floridian Resort, and the Disney's Animal Kingdom Lodge, all eye-popping in their grandeur.
Best Access to the Parks
Disney's Contemporary, Polynesian, Bay Lake Tower, and Grand Floridian with monorail access to the Magic Kingdom, Epcot, and the Transportation and Ticket Center. At Universal, the Hard Rock Hotel is just a five-minute walk or boat ride to Universal Studios, Islands of Adventure, and CityWalk.
Best for Romance
Disney's Polynesian Resort, whose lush tiki-torch-lit grounds and white-sand beaches with views of Cinderella's Castle are simply dreamy, or Universal's Portofino Bay Hotel, where an evening stroll along the bay with Italian arias playing in the distance can't be beat.
Best for Nature Lovers
Disney's Wilderness Lodge, a nature lover's dream of rushing waterfalls, spouting geysers, and bubbly creeks, all surrounded by stately pine trees and sparkling Bay Lake.
Best for Tennis
The great tennis centers at the Hyatt Regency Grand Cypress and Reunion Resort.
Best for Golf
At the Ritz-Carlton Grande Lakes you'll find a Greg Norman–designed course set on the headwaters of the Everglades and an innovative Caddy-Concierge Program; the Reunion Resort has three outstanding courses designed by Arnold Palmer, Jack Nicklaus, and Tom Watson; and the Waldorf Astoria whose Rees Jones-designed course winds through a wetland preserve.
Best Resort Lounges
California Grill Lounge. The Contemporary Resort's fifteenth-floor lounge offers unrivaled views of the Magic Kingdom and the Seven Seas Lagoon. Sip on cocktails, nosh on fantastically fresh sushi, and catch one of the best views of the Wishes fireworks display. CARA'S TIP: If you're only coming for drinks, it can be difficult to get in around fireworks time. You'll need to check first at the second-floor podium.
The Waldorf Astoria's Peacock Alley where chic guests gather for cocktails and snacks. And there's more at Sir Harry's Lounge with its masculine, private club atmosphere and live piano music.
Bluezoo. This restaurant bar at the Dolphin is the coolest place around.
Velvet. The Hard Rock Hotel is where you'll find this ultrahip cocktail lounge.
Bar America. Portofino Bay's upscale lounge overlooks the romantic piazza.
Il Mulino. The Walt Disney World Swan's hip restaurant bar, a study in refinement and style.
Sora. One happening sushi/cocktail bar at Gaylord Palms Resort. Along with it's contemporary Asian flair are cool cocktails with ingredients such as green tea liquor, ginger lemon grass infused vodka, and muddled shisho leaves.
The Wave. Futuristic glowing blue lounge at the Contemporary Resort where wines from the Southern hemisphere, organic beers, and antioxidant cocktails are the norm.
Best Concierge Lounge
Disney's Grand Floridian's Royal Palm Club where there's Disney best spread of appetizers and pleasant music wafting up from the Grand Lobby below. And the Ritz Carlton's exceptional lounge with great views and the best food and drinks around.
Best Spas
Spa by Guerlain at the Waldorf Astoria, a respite you'll never want to leave.
The Mandara Spa at the Walt Disney World Dolphin where you'll find exotic Balinese-inspired atmosphere and treatments.
The Ritz Carlton Spa, a tranquil oasis in the center of theme park craziness.
Best Suites
The Royal Assante Presidential Suite at the Animal Kingdom Lodge with its thatch roof ceiling, hand-carved furnishings, African textiles, and sweeping views of the resort's savanna.
The Emperor's Suite at the Walt Disney World Dolphin, a two-story delight in a divine contemporary style with views for miles and miles.
The Hemingway Presidential Suite at Gaylord Palms, a masculine beauty in the style Ernest would have loved.
The Waldorf Astoria's Presidential Suite whose lush furnishings, lofty views, and sheer elegance are a dream come true.
Dining
Best Italian
Il Mulino at the Walt Disney World Swan, with amazing tuna carpaccio and beautiful gamberi francese, giant shrimp in creamy white wine lemon sauce, Bice at Portofino Bay Hotel for rich braised veal shank accompanied by creamy saffron risotto, and La Luce at the Waldorf Astoria where the pasta and pizza are the best in town.
Best seafood
Flying Fish at Disney's BoardWalk for their signature potato wrapped snapper in a red wine sauce, or Todd English's Bluezoo at the Walt Disney World Dolphin, where seafood is taken to new heights. Off Disney property it's got to be Roy's on Sand Lake Road near Universal for Roy Yamaguchi's remarkable Hawaiian fusion cuisine.
Best steak
Shula's at the Walt Disney World Dolphin, a standout for sensational Angus steaks cooked to perfection, or Bull & Bear at the Waldorf Astoria where the sublime steaks match the fabulous atmopshere.
Best for romance
Victoria and Albert's at Disney's Grand Floridian Resort, where you'll savor a sumptuous six-course meal served on elegant fine china to the accompaniment of enchanting harp music.
Best for kids
Children love T-Rex Café at Downtown Disney with giant Audio-Animatronics dinosaurs, an ice cave, and a paleontology dig. A close runner up is Whispering Canyon Café at Disney's Wilderness Lodge; come prepared for plenty of whoopin' and hollerin', and please, whatever you do, don't ask for the ketchup—unless, that is, you like a lot of attention.
Best character meal
Cinderella's Royal Table at the Magic Kingdom, a chance to dine in a fairy-tale castle with the Disney princesses. Or try the Crystal Palace at the Magic Kingdom for a tasty, bountiful buffet hosted by Winnie the Pooh and his friends.
Best hip atmosphere
Todd English's Bluezoo at the Dolphin, the coolest spot this side of South Beach, or Tchoup Chop at Universal's Royal Pacific Resort, a knock-'em-dead, Asian-inspired beauty.
Best Disney view
California Grill at Disney's Contemporary Resort, with its picture-perfect views of the Magic Kingdom, the Seven Seas Lagoon, and the Wishes fireworks presentation.
Best Disney resort restaurant
Tough call. My favorites are the California Grill at the Contemporary Resort (just about anything on their exceptional menu is fantastic), or Victoria and Albert's at the Grand Floridian Resort (particularly the Chef's Table, where Chef Scott Hunnel oversees an eleven-course meal designed especially for you).
Best Downtown Disney restaurant
Wolfgang Puck's upstairs Dining Room for "Chinois" rack of lamb served with a spicy cilantro-mint sauce.
Best Universal resort restaurant
Tchoup Chop at the Royal Pacific Resort for wonderful Asian and Polynesian-influenced cuisine in a stunning setting, or Bice at Portofino Bay Hotel, where superb Northern Italian food is served in a sophisticated dining room.
Best CityWalk restaurant
Emeril's for its justifiably famous Creole-Cajun food.
Best Epcot Illuminations view
Rose and Crown in World Showcase's United Kingdom. Set your priority seating for about one hour prior to showtime and pray for a lagoonside table with a good view.
Best breakfast
Kouzzina at Disney's Boardwalk. Go for the blueberry orange granola pancakes or the delicious spinach, tomato, and feta scrambled eggs

Fun Stool Facts
There are many facts every stool-shopper should know. Some may surprise you. Many you already know from experience. All are important enough to review before you buy another stool, or as you evaluate what's around the house.
Stepstools are different sizes. Know the extra reach you need to access your top cabinet shelves and the top of the refrigerator. Have a friend or family member measure how much extra height you need, and write it down. Buy a stepstool that gives you that range. If another member of the family is going to use it, buy one that fits the smaller person.
Like ladders, modernisland stools have weight limits. Don't purchase something you cannot use. Find one that is right for you. The weight rating is generally stamped on the stool. If you don't locate it, check the box. If a stool bends or breaks because the person using it is heavier than the rating, it's not the manufacturer's fault. Avoid injury; pay the extra for a rating of 500 pounds to cover the additional weight of what's being lifted up or down.
More facts every stool-shopper should know involves anti-skid covering like the ones used in shoes. Think of the car when you are driving on a slippery surface like ice, snow, or rain. If your tires have a lot of tread, or better yet, are surfaced with anti-skid design, it is easier to maintain control. Tennis shoes provide the same kind of resistance to keep you standing straight and slide-free. Your bare feet or socks, however, offer no resistance. You might go sliding.
It's been said that nothing beats the smell of real leather. That may be true in a new car. For a stool, nothing beats the ease of cleaning faux leather covering. It's much better than genuine leather for a stool back or seat. Real leather absorbs sweat and drink stains quickly and holds them. When it starts cracking and tearing from age, it is expensive to repair. Go with the faux leather when available.
Durable modernisland stools, with good support and balance, are necessary as a person ages. It gets harder to lift the knee to get the foot to the next step. Balance is not what it used to be. Vision and distance perception have changed for the worse. As a minimum, have a two-step stool with a shorter distance between the steps. Anti-skid covering should be on both steps and the feet of the stool. Side handles will provide a safe hold, and a railing of some sort around the front will protect against falling.
Having a stool with a bright color that contrasts with its surrounding will help the user know his/her position while on the stool, and while stepping down and off. Also, the stool should be a size that fits the user. The feet should fit the stool, and the body should be within its width.
Plastic stools don't weather well. If left outside, they may break and shatter when used again. In addition, they are light and more prone to tip for heavier people. If using a plastic stool for a small child, look for the same safety features as you do for the elderly. Facts every stool-shopper should know include the ability to have anti-skid covering on plastic stools, top and bottom.
