Wimbledon 2010: Andy Murray column
The Queen's visit to Wimbledon was not just a great occasion for me - all of the players loved it.
Players are usually so picky with their time at Grand Slams but everybody really wanted to meet the Queen and be around the event because it was a once in a lifetime opportunity and a real honour.
It certainly made the build-up to my match a little bit different, there were a few more things to focus on and arrange beforehand, but once you get out there you have to put all that stuff to the back of your mind and try to get on with it.
Wimbledon Championship Hospitality
In terms of the etiquette of the day, I spoke with some of the tournament officials who took me out onto Centre Court and told me to bow when I went out, and bow when I came back, and that after the match we would both go to meet the Queen.
Jarkko and I are in different locker rooms though, so the two of us spoke just before we went out onto court. In the past, the players used to have their bags taken out for them, but that didn't happen this time so we wanted to make sure we both knew what we were going to do.
As for the bow, I must admit, I was pretty nervous and I made sure I practised a few times in the mirror the night before. I also discussed with Jarkko what we should do.
It just seemed a bit more natural if we dropped the bags because if you have your bag on your back you can't do a proper bow, and we agreed that it looks a little bit stiff if you don't do anything with your hands.
Anyway, I've got relatively good reviews considering it was the first time I've done it, although Tim Henman was giving me grief in the BBC studios afterwards.
Once the match started I played well, even though it was a really tough start facing four break points in the first game. I spoke to Jarkko after the match and said that although I went 3-0 up, it could almost have been the other way around.
My focus is now on Gilles Simon in the third round and he's a really good player. He was in the top 10 for quite a while and has had a knee problem this year, but he's beaten Federer and Nadal and had a lot of tough matches with Djokovic. He's a really tough guy to beat.
After the past couple of days, there might not be quite as much attention on Wimbledon when we play on Saturday, but I don't really mind either way - it's something you just deal with once you get on the court.
Wimbledon Corporate Hospitality
You have to put all those other things to the back of your mind and not focus on them, and I did a good job of that on Thursday.
This Wimbledon has definitely been different though. I don't think a match like Isner and Mahut will ever happen again in my lifetime, and the Queen might not come to Wimbledon again during my career, although I hope she does.

How to keep score in tennis?
Does anyone know how to keep score in tennis? Can you tell me how to do the duce then ither add in or add out. And how all that sugar works? I need to know by TONIGHT! Please
do you have to say add out or add in two tomes?
Okay, when no one has scored yet, the score is 0, which is called "Love" in tennis.
Here are all the scores in order.
Love (0)
15
30
40
Game (Winner)
When both players/teams have the same score, you say "(the score) all." Example: 15 all.
When both players/teams have 40 points, it is called deuce. When you are at deuce, you need to score two points to win. The first point is called an ad. (advantage) If the other person scores, you lose the ad. (If a player/team has an ad an then the other side scores a point, the score goes back to deuce.) If you already have an ad and then you win the next point, you win the game.
I know it seems confusing at first, but you'll get the hang of it quickly!

Movement Training For Tennis Video (Copyright 1990) (VHS) $31.95 How can players set themselves up to hit perfect returns like the pros? Let Jack Groppel, Lynne Rolley, Stan Smith, and Nick Saviano show you in Movement Training for Tennis. Developed through the expertise of the United States Tennis Association (USTA) Sport Science Committee, this video presents a progression of drills to help players at any level add explosive movement to their game. World-renowned tennis coach Dr. Jack Groppel enlists the aid of USTA tennis experts to show coaches, instructors, and players how reaction time and movement time result in explosive speed. This concept involves the player's seeing the ball off the opponent's racket (reaction time), adding an immediate split-step toward the ball (movement time), and completing the execution of the shot with a rapid release of energy (explosive movement). In Part I of this video, players start off with warm-up drills to prevent injury. Next, there's a progression of sport-specific drills designed to help players improve shot anticipation, initial take-off, footwork, body position, and recovery time after hitting the shot. Players will progress from short speed drills to more complex drills that incorporate lateral and horizontal movements. In Part II, the unique sliding techniques required to play effectively on clay is demonstrated. Players will learn how to step into the slide before executing the stroke, how to recover after the shot, and how to maintain balance throughout. Movement Training for Tennis is a valuable tool in helping players use movement to stay on top of their opponents' shots during match play and get the winning edge. Tennis Tips: Approach Shot With Video Demonstration
Approach shots are often meant to be taken advantage of to win the point over an opponent. This video tennis lesson will provide you a guide and demonstration on how to put away a short ball to win the point. Are you approaching these short balls to win the point against your opponent? Watch the video and read on for a better judgment.
Now for those that would appreciate this demonstration in paragraph form, here it is. It will give you tips of what to do and what to avoid when going after these approach shots.
An approach shot is when your opponent gives you a short ball, causing you to run up closer to the net. The next few tennis tips explain the importance of how putting away these approach shots will give you the advantage over your opponent.
When you approach the ball, be sure to put your weight forward and into the ball. This will give you more power and control over the ball.
The video instruction talks about this particular motion of putting your weight forward and into the ball comparable to thinking of superman taking off or an airplane taking off into the air. There's an important forward motion from either example. This makes your shot more aggressive and powerful.
It is important to be prepared in the game of tennis. With this said, when approaching a short ball, be sure to have your racket back ready to swing. This will give you more time and a better shot.
Take advantage of the short ball. Do not tap the ball back; be aggressive and put full force onto the ball. Beginners tend to be pushers and think of simply getting the ball back. But to win the point, you have to think about putting away these approach shots.
Another important aspect of this shot would be your footwork. But then again, footwork is the key to tennis. Once you lose your footwork, you've lost control of the game.
There are many other factors that could affect your success in hitting an approach shot. Getting critiques on your shots will definitely help in improving your game. You can submit your videos for a free critique here to give you an idea on what is correct and what needs improvement. This will definitely help you learn to hit an approach shot with an advantage.

Wimbledon Tennis Championships Women's Tournament
On Monday 20th June starts the 125th edition of the famous and most prestigious major tournament Wimbledon. The courts of All England Club in south west London are ready for two weeks of non-stop tennis of the highest level. The women's singles tournament begins with 32 pairs of tennis players facing each other in day one of the first round, and there are some very interesting names that are going to enter the courts.
The last year's runner-up Vera Zvonareva from Russia is going to be part of the opening match on No. 1 Court. She is facing the young Alison Riske from USA. This is the second participation of the American in the tournament since her debut last year in the tournament. She was knocked out of the tournament in the first round and this time around her chances to continue in the second round of The Championship don't look too good especially when at the other end of the net is the second best from last year.
Another very interesting player begins her tournament today and that is the five-times Wimbledon champion Venus Williams. The older of the Williams sister was recovering from a serious injury until not so long ago and the British Open is her first big challenge since returning to courts. She is facing Akgul Amanmuradova from Uzbekistan, so Venus probably won't have any troubles reaching the second round of the tournament but we will see her fitness level.
Another interesting match that is going to be played on Centre Court in Day 1 of the first round, is the match between former French Open winner Franceska Sciavone and once semi-finalist at All England Club courts Jelena Dokic. Although on paper this match looks very interesting it all depend from the form which Dokic currently has. Her best days are way behind her and she might not be the challenger that is going to stop Sciavone on grass courts.
Last year semi-finalist Tsvetana Pironkova and Petra Kvitova also have matches today. The Bulgarian Pironkova is facing Giorgi from Italy while the Czech Kvitova is up against Alexa Glatch from USA.
