This was a needed statement to other players after her 2nd round loss at the Medibank International to Dominika Cibulkova. She in essence said, "Back off, I can win this thing." This bears well in Caroline's quest for her first Grand Slam.
Sam Stosur has made a statement of her own after losing in the 2nd round of the first two tournaments she played this year. She has only lost 7 games in her first two matches at the Australian Open. Looking ahead at the draw (I know I shouldn't) I'm looking forward to a possible Semifinal match between Clijsters and Stosur, a rematch from Doha, a few months ago where Sam lost to Kim 7-6 (3), 6-1. I'm sure that match will be used as motivation for Sam.
Some other players that are quietly moving through the draw and need to be watched are Nadia Petrova (13th seed) from Russia, Flavia Pennetta (22nd seed) from Italy, Julia Goerges from Germany, Simona Halep (qualifier) from Romania, and Barbora Zahlavova Strycova from the Czech. Barbora took down Aravane Rezai (17th seed) and wildcard entrant Jelena Dokic in two impressive wins. She has a tough task ahead of her in facing Na Li in the 3rd round. Julia has taken two tough three setters, and now is set to face Maria Sharapova in her third round. Simona Halep beat Kleybanova (24th seed) in her second round match in straight sets. Flavia has only lost 7 games in her first two matches, and looks very strong headed into her battle with Shahar Peer. Petrova has the best draw until a possible 4th round clash with Kim Clijsters.
Caroline is not looking like she wants to let go of that #1 ranking anytime soon, however here are some scenarios that could happen…
Clijsters needs to reach the Final to have a CHANCE at taking the No.1 ranking after Australian Open. She has only reached the final once in her last 8 Australian Open appearances. If Wozniacki reaches 4r or QF, Clijsters would need to win the title to move to No.1
Zvonareva needs to reach the Final to have a CHANCE at taking the No.1 ranking after Australian Open. If Wozniacki reaches 3r, 4r or QF, Zvonareva would need to win the title tomove to No.1. If Wozniacki reaches SF, Zvonareva cannot move to No.1.
If Wozniacki reaches the SF, she will retain the No.1 ranking regardless of other results.
