Illegal to Pick up a Ball?
Illegal to Pick up a Ball?
TenCairong, a farmer lost his land, was convicted as a criminal for the reason of picking up golf balls. It is not the only case, all the villagers' fate are deeply related to the golf industry in there village.
Golf courses are looked upon as a symbol of wealth and higher social status in China. Many cities in China want to attract investments to build up a golf course in order to set an image of higher standard of life style. Guiyang is the capital of Guizhou province, while it is still an underdeveloped city with lots of citizens live below the country's average living standard. But Guiyang local government allowed the real estate company to develop a high-standard golf course. The government forced the farmers to sell their original lands at the price of 600 dollars per km2, which is very little. The farmers lost their farmland, having no source of income to support themselves and their families. As for the estate dealers, they sell the cottages/villas which built in the golf course for millions of dollars. The villagers have protested against the estate holders but all in vain. It is a fierce competition between the poor and the rich, in which the poor never win.
TenCairong, the farmer I mentioned at the beginning of the story, can represent those suffering farmers most. As there is no farm work to do to earn a living after all the farmlands were turned into golf course, farmers tried mang efforts to find a substitute job, but unfortunately, most of them failed.
One day, a golf player in the golf course suggest that the farmers can pick up the balls that were lost by the golfers and sell the balls back to the golfers at a comparative low price. It sounds a beneficial deal for both the golfers and the farmers. After that, farmers start a new way of earning money- to pick up the lost balls outside the golf course and sell the ball five yuan each back to the golfers. Compared to a new ball, whose price is ten yuan, the picked-up balls become very popular among the golfers.
Almost every villager takes this as a full-time or part-time job. One villager recalls that he would pick up two or three balls everyday to buy himself a pack of cigarettes. And for one month he could earn some one or two hundred yuan. Most villagers sell the balls they have picked immediately. But TenCairong had a different idea- he accumulated the balls he picked, wanting to sell them all when money is in great need. But one day, the police unexpectedly discovered the balls he had accumulated and thus, he was put into prison.
One police officer in the area told our reporter that the golf course claimed those balls picked up by the villagers are owned by the golf course. The villagers' illegally picking them up is a violation to the Chinese law. But the villagers think they are not stealing the balls,- they just picked the balls outside the golf course and the balls were abandoned by the golfers so that they could pick up them and claim the ownership of the balls.
What's your opinion? Please le me know. I am now very concerned about the conflicts between golf courses and farmers. I will write more detailed things later.
