Djokovic wins the Rafa Slam
World No.1 Rafael Nadal was hoping to clinch a Non-Calendar Year Grand Slam in Australia, but Novak Djokovic had other plans.
The main attraction for first Grand Slam of the year was probably the possibility of witnessing Spaniard Rafael Nadal completing his first Non-Calendar Year Grand Slam in Melbourne, Australia. After his successful appearances in 2010 at the French Open, Wimbledon and the US Open -winning the three of them-, the Australian Open was Nadal's next target for 2011. The excitement from the fans and media was such that they even came up with a name to honor the World No. 1's achievement of winning four Majors in a row, which they began to call the "Rafa Slam".
Unfortunately for Nadal an injury added to the good tennis played by his countryman David Ferrer in the quarter finals where going to put and end to the "Rafa Slam". With the No. 1 seed and 2009 champion off the way, all eyes were now on the defending champion, the Swiss Roger Federer, who was after his fifth title (2004, 2006, 2007 and 2010) in Melbourne.
Federer had a smooth trip into the semifinals, as his countryman Stanislas Wawrinka (seed 19) was never a threat for him in the quarterfinals, and easily won the match in straights sets of 6-1, 6-3, 6-3. In the semifinals an old rival was awaiting for him: Serbian Novak Djokovic, in a rematch of the 2008 semifinals, which was won by Djokovic and led him into his career first Grand Slam title.
Their most recent confrontation had taken place at the 2010 US Open -in the semifinals as well- in an epic match that went until the last of five sets to be decided in favor of Djokovic. This time three sets where going to be enough for the Serbian to defeat the Swiss for the seventh time (Federer has won 13) in his career, and win a berth for the final against the Scottish Andy Murray.
Djokovic arrived to the decisive game at Melbourne Park with the boost of having eliminated the defending champion and having lost only one set throughout the tournament. Before Federer, he had left behind Spaniard Marcel Granollers, Croatian Ivan Dodig, Serbian Viktor Troicki, Spaniard Nicolas Almagro and Czech Thomas Berdych. Now the only obstacle in between him and his second Australian Open trophy was Murray, but not for long, as he defeated the Scottish in straight sets of 6–4, 6–2, 6–3.
The Serbian feels more mature and confident about his game this year, and he attributed the bad moments in his career to personal issues that he used to bring to the court. But now he claims that he has been successful in separating his private life from his professional one, and feels that this is being reflected in his game.
With this result Djokovic gets closer to the second place in the ATP World Tour Raking, which belongs to Federer with 7.965 points for an 85 point difference between them. If he continues to play with the same accuracy and mental strength as he displayed in the Australian Open, his chances of improving that third place in the ranking will surely be increased.

Cricket - Australia's National Sport
The game of Cricket has a long history dating back to English royalty in the 1600's as a source of activity, competition, and sport. In the 1800's England introduced the game to their colony, Australia, where interest grew and became the national sport. The early Australian teams consisted of mostly Aboriginal players that toured around England, which began a rivalry between England and Australia.
Aussies enjoy sports of many types including golf, tennis, rugby, and several styles of football. However, no sport in the nation tops the attention given to Cricket and the Ashes series, a Test between England and the Australian National Cricket Team.
For more than two hundred years the Australian nation has enjoyed the game of cricket, as it has become popular with more than one half million men, women, and children.
The game is played on four levels, by the middle and working class, in the bush, and in every state.
Cricket is played on an oval-shaped field using a bat, ball and gloves. Two teams of eleven players each compete for an agreed amount of time and number of innings with equal turns at batting and fielding. A formal game of cricket may last for an afternoon, or go for several days. Runs are scored by a batsman in one of four ways, and the team with the most runs is the winner.
In Australia, the National Team is made up of men that make a living playing cricket. As a result of the popularity of the game, many players become legends and national heroes based on brilliant performances on the field. Footwork and stamina are key to being successful as a cricket player. While several players have all-time best rankings, Sir Donald Bradman is considered to be the greatest batsman of all time.
During a twenty-year career that began before World War II, Bradman is credited with a Test batting average of 99.94, a feat that will likely never be matched. Bradman is the only Australian to be knighted for his achievements in the game of cricket. The Bradman Foundation, established in Sir Donald's name supports youth cricket across the continent.
More recently, Shane Warne and Glenn McGrath retired as two of the all-time top four greatest bowlers. Warne's on-the-field reputation was especially impressive in Ashes and World Cup matches. He is currently ranked seventh all-time most catches as a fielder in Test cricket. McGrath retired as the third highest wicket taker in Test cricket.
Leading the National Team into the 2010/11 Ashes competition beginning on 25 November in Brisbane, captain Ricky Ponting is counting on victory going to the hosting team. Ponting is one of two most experienced players on the Aussie team playing his seventh Ashes series and his fourth as captain.
Currently holding the championship urn, England won the trophy in the 2008/09 Test. In favour of the hosting Aussie team, England last won that trophy on Australian soil almost twenty-four years ago.

For your fantastic Australian holiday, stay at a Melbourne hotel
The state capital of Victoria, Melbourne is Australia's second largest city and a really popular holiday destination for travellers to the Antipodes. Situated on the estuary of the magnificent Yarra River, this great city is often called the cultural capital of Australia. The most practical way to get to Melbourne is by air, as it has a large international airport situated just outside. You can easily reach your Melbourne hotel by taxi as it takes only about twenty- five minutes to reach the centre by taxi. Alternatively there is a skybus which runs regularly. Melbourne is also a regular destination for cruises and there is a daily ferry from the nearby island of Tasmania. While staying at your Melbourne hotel you will find that there are many things to do. The people who live in Melbourne are absolutely passionate about sport, and there are hundreds of sporting venues both large and small in the city .Their favourite sport has to be Australian Rules Football, a sort of cross between rugby and soccer with a dash of basketball thrown in occasionally. It is rough and entertaining to watch, and 9 out of the 16 teams who play in the Australian league are based in Melbourne. In summer of course, there is cricket played at the Melbourne Cricket ground and a day at any cricket match where Australia are concerned is a treat for any sporting enthusiast. The Melbourne cup, which is one of the world's premier horse races, is run at the race course in November then in January comes the Australian Open tennis, one of the four grand slam tournament of tennis, which is played at Melbourne Park and attracts all the top tennis players in the world. While the men watch sport, the women can follow one of their favourite pastimes, namely, shopping. You can leave your Melbourne hotel and go shopping for seven days a week. Melbourne is the fashion capital of Australia and as you would expect there are some of the top fashion houses and designers here. You can also get vintage clothing and retro outfits here mixed together in a uniquely Australian style. Some streets are just wall to wall boutiques where you can shop ‘till you drop. There are also cheaper alternatives and if you go into the suburbs there are warehouse direct outlets where you can really pick up the bargains. Australia's largest shopping centres are in Melbourne, including the largest shopping centre in the Southern hemisphere which boasts over 530 stores. Melbourne is a great place to eat with its eclectic mix of food outlets. There is something for everyone. You can eat in your Melbourne hotels and get a great meal, or you can try one of the many ethnic eating places in the city. You can find a really tasty helping of fish and chips.
