Nadal won his fifth Grand Slam in Paris in 2010 and he is still the one to beat on clay, but the Serbian has shown the others that he is beatable. Spread enthusiasts selling the world number one's tournament index may want to consider that he went into the 2010 Paris final having won all Masters 1000 tournaments on clay – including Monte Carlo, Rome and Madrid.
Spread buyers of Djokovic's tournament index will likely have noted his mightily impressive start to 2011, having won 37 successive matches. Further encouragement for the Serbian's spread supporters in Paris is that in the past couple of weeks he's beaten Nadal in the Madrid and Rome finals. Interestingly, the two clay finals in Madrid and Rome were settled in two sets and that will spark debate among those that enjoy a spread bet on the total games market for this year's final.
In last year's French open final, Nadal came through 6–4, 6–2, 6–4 against Robin Soderling, which was the third straight final that was settled with the minimum amount of sets. However, prior to 2008 finale, eight of the previous nine finals had all gone to at least four sets, so spread punters should weigh up their options carefully.
Anyone looking for a spread bet on Andy Murray's outright index will be pleased to see him reach the semi-finals in Rome, before eventually losing in three sets to Djokovic. Sellers will be tempted to go against the Scot though considering his best run was to the 2008 quarter-finals.
In the women's draw, Maria Sharapova is finding form at the right time with a straight sets win over Sam Stoser in Rome. But spread sellers would point out that her Rome title was the first in 2011 and that her best effort in Paris was reaching the last semi-finals four years ago.
Last year's women's final was won by Francesca Schiavone, beating Sam Stosur 6-4 7-6. The straight sets victory was the ninth successive final that was settled within two sets. Spread bettors looking at the total games market for the final might like to know that the 2010 showdown produced the most games in nine years with 23. Spread sellers would highlight that there have been some low accumulative game totals in finals though, 15 in 2007 and 12 in 2005. The average number of games in the past nine women's finals is 17.8.
